The Best Snack Foods for Weight Loss

Snack foods can help curb hunger and keep you from cheating while on a diet. Snack foods are readily available in grocery stores and can be bought already prepared or can be prepared in advance to eat later. Dieters find that healthy, low-calorie snack foods help them avoid hunger throughout the day and feel satisfied, too.

Fruit

Fruit is an excellent source of vitamins and lets you give in to cravings for something sweet. Wash them well and have them readily available to eat.

Raw Vegetables

Vegetables can be bought already prepared or whole, ready to be cleaned and cut up. Celery, carrots, cauliflower and broccoli are excellent snacks that last for at least a week in plastic bags or air-tight containers. Dip veggies in low-calorie dressing for a boost of flavor.

Snack Packs

All different types of foods come in snack packs. You can buy 100-calorie packages of crackers, cookies or pretzels, eliminating the need to count calories.

Nuts

Nuts are good for you and filling, too. Nuts such as walnuts provide omega-3 fatty acids, which are good for your heart. Nuts "contain monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats to keep your arteries clear, as well as levels of precursors of serotonin to boost mood," according to Drs. Mehmet Oz and Michael Roizen. But nuts can be high in calories, so don't eat more than the recommended serving size.

Rice Cakes

Rice cakes have come a long way and are available in cheese, chocolate and many other flavors with about 35 calories each.

Yogurt and Cheese

Yogurt and cottage cheese are excellent sources of calcium and protein and taste good, too.
