Though yogurt remains safe to eat for 7-10 days after its expiration date, once that time has passed or the yogurt has become unpalatable, finding alternative uses for it is an environmentally kind and budget-friendly solution. The bacteria active in yogurt can easily be put to use.
Skin Care
According to "Reader's Digest," applying plain yogurt to your skin cleanses the skin and tightens your pores. After applying to an area of skin, such as your face, let the yogurt sit for 20 minutes, then rinse. For added revitalization, mix 1 tsp. of the plain yogurt with the juice (including some pulp) of 1/4 slice of orange and 1 tsp. of aloe. Apply the mixture and allow it to sit for at least 5 minutes before rinsing. For mildly sunburned skin, the yogurt's cool temperature and moisture provide quick but temporary relief from pain.
Hair Care
To add moisture and protein to your hair, yogurt can be used to make homemade hair treatments. Combine an egg white (beaten until foamy) with 6 tbsp. of plain yogurt. Apply the mixture to your hair and leave in for 15 minutes before rinsing. Add the nourishing effects of fruit by blending half a banana, a quarter of a cantaloupe, a quarter of an avocado, 1 tbsp. wheat germ oil and 1 tsp. yogurt, as advised by Health Recipes website. This mixture also requires 15 minutes on the hair before being rinsed out. Adding a vitamin E capsule to the mixture increases the conditioning effects.
Moss "Paint"
Yogurt can also be used to strategically place moss in areas such as between stepping stones or on the sides of flower pots for decorative purposes. Use a blender to mix 1 cup of plain yogurt and 1 cup of water with a handful of common lawn moss. The mixture is then applied, using a paintbrush, to the area of your choice. "Reader's Digest" suggests only applying the mixture to cool and shady locations and misting the mixture periodically until the moss growth is established.
